Workshop on Self-Reference and Self-Models for Cognitive Architectures

This workshop will focus on the concept of “phenomenal self-model” as defined by Thomas Metzinger and its application to Cognitive Architectures.

A first short talk will summarize Metzinger’s philosophical model of consciousness from a software engineering perspective and compare it with the HOT/HOP higher-order theories of consciousness. (video)

In the subsequent short talk we will extend on Metzinger’s model and propose a number of sub-models that correspond to the layers of a typical cognitive architecture. We will show how self-reference and self-models provide a gradual approximation to “phenomenal subjectivity”. (video)

Next, Patrick Hammer will talk about self-reference in NARS (slides | video).

The remaining time is reserved for discussion. (video)
